Update: December 20th I spoke with @Bliemaster and he helped me out with the charge issue. Glad I got that squared.
Last month I wrote about MoviePass and was going to give them a try for a month. I had a bad experience with them. MoviePass is a company which charges users a monthly fee to see movies in the theater. For example: you pay $34.99 a month and get to see 1 movie per day and can’t see the same movie more than once. They say it’s unlimited but that is untrue.
My bad experiences:
- I printed out a movie to another movie theater close by, drove all the way there to make the showing, presented the printed out coupon to the movie theater and they tell me they don’t accept those coupons. The guy tried twice to get it to go through and it kept saying declined. I called their customer service and was told there was nothing they could do! What a hassle!
- There are no theaters close by that accept Moviepass, I have to drive across town that accepts the coupons. There is nothing but AMC theaters around me and all of them refuse to use MoviePass. When the company first launched there was a big falling out between AMC and MoviePass.
- I was seeing movies I didn’t care to see, I felt almost forced to see more movies than usual because I was paying for a service where I’m trying to get the most out of my money. There are not a lot of good movies to even justify paying a monthly fee.
- I notified support 1 week before my month ended to find out when I would be charged for next month. It was brought to my attention that the 14th was my billing cycle. At 1am on the 13th I contacted support@moviepass.com and told them I want my account canceled and credit card information removed from the site. Later, when I woke up I didn’t receive any emails from them, which I thought was odd. At around noon I went on to moviepass.com and clicked live chat. I spoke to someone and told them I sent an email and want to make sure my account was canceled. The person I talked to ensured me my account is canceled and was escalated to make sure I wouldn’t be charged. The next day, the 14th, I received an email from PayPal saying I was charged $34.99 from moviepass.com! I was so aggravated at this point, I emailed them and tweeted them. They told me that it takes 24-48 hours to refund on PayPal which is untrue, PayPal is instant. They said it was a problem on their end and it’s out of their hands now for processing the refund.
- As I pointed out, they claim you get unlimited trips to the movie theater, this is untrue! You can only see the same movie once and only see one movie per day. How is that unlimited?
- Pay attention to their Facebook wall and you will see all sorts of problems being reported. Feel sorry for anyone that subscribed annually.
At first I was so excited to give them a try and it was nothing but problems with them.
