When it comes to social media I find myself using the Facebook hide (now subscribe) button quite frequently. The reason I hide someone is quite simple. Friends usually post about their emotions more than actual posts I can relate to, this becomes obnoxious.
Stop using Facebook as a personal diary of emotions.
Last year I tweeted a lot during Colorado Rockies games but I realized nobody cares. Most of my social media following is related to tech and not my emotions about a Rockies game. This made me reevaluate my social media posts. I often ask myself, would I comment on this if a friend posted this? I was surprised to find out how many times I ended up not posting.
I paid attention to several patterns of social media posts and came to the conclusion what nobody cares about.
Nobody cares that you’re hungry…or if you ever eat for that matter.
Nobody cares that you’re tired.
Nobody cares you worked a long shift.
Nobody cares that your body part hurts….walk to the kitchen and get some Tylenol!
Nobody cares about how cute your kid looks every day….every once in a while is acceptable but not every day.
Nobody cares you post the same picture of yourself in a different angle daily….just stop. If you’re trying that hard to find a good angle photo, odds are nobody thinks you’re attractive anyways.
Nobody cares that you post stuff that has absolutely no meaning….example “Oh I can’t wait!!”. Obviously the first response will be “can’t wait for what?”
Nobody cares how cute your pet is, we get the point after the 100th photo that you like your pet, stop sharing.
I have conducted a few experiments, one consisted of me posting about Chick-fil-a an abnormal amount of time. It didn’t take long before a friend said “Jeff you post a lot about Chick-fil-A”. But that’s exactly what I wanted lol. I wanted to know how many times it would take before I annoyed.
I conducted another experiment where I posted about the same tv show every week for a whole season. I noticed my social interactions with posting the same thing declines rapidly after the first couple times. Three to four times is usually the breaking point where it gets annoying. Anything after four of the same redundant post, I don’t see any social interactions.
P.S. Think before you post.
P.P.S. I already took in consideration that nobody might care about this post.
