Every company is faced with the question, “how can I get more business?”
If I told you to give me $2,502 and I can get you local and national news coverage for your company, would you do it? Michael Fruitman (owner of Mike’s Stadium Sportscards) did, he bought the balloon boy’s saucer from Richard Heene in a private auction. Mike had a great genius idea for buying the saucer, market his local card shop. To make it in this world you need to brand yourself, that’s why I brand myself as “Digi Jeff” instead of “that Jeff guy that does all sorts of digital and website stuff.”
How can this help spread virally with social media?
When someone takes a picture of themselves and share it on social media, people will be asking where did you take that photo? This helps spread the word, Mike’s Stadium Sportscards owns the saucer and go there to take a picture. Mike realizes that not everyone will walk out of his store buying something. The concept is to bring awareness to his store and attract new customers. If Honda bought the saucer and had it on display in their dealership, people would drive there and take a picture with it, some might leave the dealership with a new car.
Mike was telling me about a fascinating story about Todd McFarlane and how he spent $3,000,000 for Mark McGwire’s 70th homerun. At the time, everyone thought he was an idiot for spending $3,000,000 on a baseball. Todd’s real intention was to score meetings with the right people in baseball so he could eventually sell his sport figures. He spent $3,000,000 on a baseball, that got him meetings, landed deals and eventually made millions from that investment. Not everyone is willing to try something new and outside the box. When Todd bought the baseball his name was all over the media. Now when people talk about the saucer Mike’s name will be mentioned.
