Apple’s new “social network for music” Ping sucks and is a big disappointment

At first when you hear “Apple is coming out with a social network for music” it gets exciting to hear more.  Then after I saw Ping and played with it, I lost all interest.  There is no doubt that iTunes is a well established brand name and service that everyone knows about, unless you are Paris Hilton doing cocaine all day.

Ping is nothing more than just added features to iTunes.  The whole “social network for music” is not even true in my perspective.

  1. When you first click Ping on the new iTunes 10 it takes me to a screen of people I’m following and people that are following me which is zero for both.
  2. The reason why it’s zero, is because it’s so complicated to invite and find friends to follow! Facebook and Twitter have great, easy, simple vanity urls to go to a profile, Ping doesn’t. #WTF
  3. After using the Facebook friend finder, it didn’t even work for me and said some error that I had to be in the United States. …..I live in Colorado how much more of the middle of the United States do I need to live in?
  4. Why is there no Twitter API to find my followers?
  5. Why is Ping only through iTunes and there is no Web version? Makes it really hard to copy/paste/share within iTunes.
  6. There should be a way to see what my friends are listening to with privacy settings that allow users to publish that. Should be able to comment on songs and share that experience with my friends.
  7. I finally found a way to figure out my link to my profile. If you click ‘My Profile’ and right click your username, you get 2 options: Open Link or Copy Link. Here is my long horrendous looking url to Ping:
http://c.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZConnections.woa/wa/viewProfile?userId=109852030 I can’t wait to memorize that and give out to my friends and tell them to follow me on Ping! #Ridiculous
  8. iTunes has SOOOOOOOOOOO…..OOOOOO..O much potential to make an awesome social network for music…..Ping is crap!
  9. When I use the Post option, it posts a song to my profile, why doesn’t this post to Facebook/Twitter etc?!  #NoIntegration
  10. Ping is almost a perfect example of a premature product that was rushed out.  I see nothing special with this at all.

Ping is similar to when I was a kid and told Santa I wanted Xbox and when I opened my presents I got a used broken Gameboy, very disappointing. If you like Ping I would love to hear WHY…
