Back on March 3rd 2003 I purchased the domain gunitworld.com. I built a simple site for fans to hear about G-Unit news. My inspiration for buying and building this fan site was when I heard Eminem talk about this upcoming new artist, 50 Cent. I bought this a month after “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” came out in stores. 50 Cent really caught my attention with his well known song, “In Da Club.” Being a big fan of Eminem and then of 50 Cent I use to always go to d12world.com (which is now known as rap basement).
I even befriended G-Unit member Hot Rod who told me that “if it wasn’t for your site I wouldn’t know all the information about G-Unit before I signed with them.” That really meant a lot to me and will always remember Rod saying that.
Whenever I would go to G-Unit’s official site, the labels just made a quick simple site with no updates. After gunitworld.com was getting a lot of attention I built several other sites and called my network HH411 (Hip Hop Info). I built a total of 117 fan related sites which included some of my favorite artists in the hip hop game; 50 Cent, Eminem, Chamillionaire, Slim Thug etc.
During 2007 I even got to meet 50 Cent at G-Unit Records which was really cool (thanks Broadway).
I decided to sell HHBoard to iHip Hop which was my biggest site in the HH411 network. At my peak I had a total of 70,000+ unique visitors a day. It’s been a long 6 years of maintaining a big hip hop network by myself. I would never imagined that buying my first domain (gunitworld.com) would lead up to building this big network of fan sites. I think it’s really true about the saying “you can do anything” because this is another example of it. I’m a white suburban kid from Colorado that built the biggest hip hop network (at the time), I think that’s pretty crazy.
It’s funny to see official sites JUST NOW getting up to the pace I was at back 6 years ago. Social Networking is the future of how anyone with a fan base communicates to their audience. If you are an artist and not using the social media platforms out there to engage your audience you will never be as big as you want. I saw this a long time ago while building these network of sites. Most corporate companies do not listen to the younger generations enough to recognize the digital transitions.
Shout out to all the members (100,000+) on hhboard that supproted me throughout the years. Too many names to mention, you know who you are.
